CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

‘That was Gordy,’ Harry said after he’d ended the call. ‘Ian Sutton died in theatre just a few minutes ago. She’s on her way to break the worst bloody news you could imagine to his parents.’

Harry wondered about giving everyone a moment to reflect on what had happened, but decided it was better to push on with what they had to do instead. Whatever they were feeling, they would be able to use that to help them focus.

‘This is no longer just a hit and run,’ he said. ‘Ian Sutton’s death was brought about by either careless or dangerous driving. As you all know, the most serious charge comes with a prison sentence of up to fourteen years. Careless or inconsiderate driving is up to five years. We don’t need to worry about the disqualifications from driving, because that’s irrelevant.’

‘This is a crime scene, then,’ said Jadyn.

‘It is,’ said Harry. ‘Which means we’re going to be keeping this road shut for a while yet.’

‘Forensics?’ asked Matt.

‘We need Sowerby here sharpish,’ nodded Harry.

‘I’ll get on with that now.’

As Matt broke off from the group to call the pathologist, Harry stared out at the scene before them. As crime scenes went, it was a little hard to identify or pin down. He had a crash site and a stretch of road across a bleak moorland, a large section of which was shut off to public access for use by the Ministry of Defence. This was not a murder in a small room filled with plenty of links and clues as to who did what to whom and why.

For all he knew, most of the evidence had already been blasted away by the weather, damaged by passing traffic, and chewed by wildlife. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t still a chance they could find something. Investigating a crash scene was more than just blood spatter and a discarded weapon; it required a whole new set of skills from the Scene of Crime team, and he felt sure that Sowerby would be over here as soon as she could.

Harry turned his attention back to the team.

‘First, we need this road closure shared up the chain so that everyone knows it’s official. Next, I want this whole area cordoned off in two sections; a small one around the crash site, and a larger one, bringing in where Jadyn found the wing mirror, all the way down to where the other roadblock is.’

‘Might not have enough tape for that,’ said Liz.

‘Find a way to make it work,’ instructed Harry. ‘We just need to make sure that it’s damned clear anyone on our side of the tape is part of the investigation, and to keep everyone else out.’

‘What about the soldiers?’ Jadyn asked.

‘Take a statement from those who found the bike and the body, and also check to see if any of them found anything else during the search. Then let’s get them off-site as soon as we can. They’ll be wanting to head off anyway, I’m sure.
